SAS High School Overview

Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) serves students attending Philadelphia’s neighborhood high schools. This nationally-acclaimed Program provides a comprehensive array of services and resources to students and their families to remove the academic, financial, and social barriers that traditionally prevent low-income, first-generation-to-college students from achieving college success.

Since 1990, SAS has made the dream of college a reality for more than 1,000 promising students, using a multi-pronged approach that includes:

  • long-term, one-on-one mentoring;
  • year-round academic enrichment and college guidance activities;
  • $6,000 for college-related expenses; and
  • individualized staff support through high school and college.

Students enter the SAS Program in the 9th grade, and immediately begin the college preparation process. While in high school, Program participants are exposed to a series of activities and resources designed to help them strengthen their academic skills, improve their standardized test scores, identify the college that's right for them, complete the college application process, obtain the financial aid needed to attend the school of their choice, and become prepared for college-level work.

Once in college, SAS students continue to access significant support and resources through Philadelphia Futures’ Office of College Retention and Success (OCRS). In addition to receiving $6,000 in sponsorship funds for college-related expenses, SAS collegians remain in close contact with the OCRS for individualized academic and personal counseling, graduate school and career preparation, and positive peer networking opportunities.

SAS students demonstrate every day that with strong support, guidance and resources, they can meet – and even surpass – the high expectations we set for them. Despite circumstances and statistics that would predict otherwise, our students succeed in high school, enter college, and obtain their degrees, all in record numbers. The effectiveness of the SAS Program has been recognized over the years with a number of prestigious awards and honors, and we continue to expand and enhance our services. Philadelphia Futures truly is changing lives, one student at a time.
