Philadelphia Futures and White-Williams Scholars Celebrate Their Merger and Their Partners

Dec._2011_Website_PhotoIn November, to celebrate its newly merged organization and the partners who made it possible, Philadelphia Futures hosted celebratory events for our many friends and supporters. The two celebrations, held days apart, took place at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University and the Pyramid Club. At The Academy, friends and supporters worked their way around Dinosaur Hall, learning the history of both organizations while meeting students and staff members at a dozen information tables, which highlighted the many aspects of our combined programs and services.

The evening's formal program, with keynote remarks given by The Academy of Natural Sciences' President and Chief Executive Officer, George W. Gephart Jr., who also is a former board member of White-Williams Scholars, concluded with an introduction of our students past and present and the life-changing opportunities made available to them.

"Over the summer, White-Williams Scholars gave me the opportunity to spend two weeks at Eastern University," said Shabria Goode, a high school senior who participates in the College Connection Program. "I lived on campus, took enrichment classes, and got a jumpstart on my college application process," she continued.

Dr. Wesley Proctor, who serves as a member of Philadelphia Futures' board of directors, demonstrated the breadth and reach of White-Williams Scholars and its important legacy. "The financial support I received in high school as a White-Williams Scholar helped build the foundation for my success in life," said Proctor, "and for this I am truly grateful."

The second celebratory event at the Pyramid Club was attended by our loyal partners and friends, along with guests who were learning about the organization for the first time. The Phillies' President and CEO, David Montgomery, offered special comments and was warmly welcomed by attendees, ardent Phillies' fans all. Philadelphia Futures and The Phillies share an enduring 11-year partnership, which has made our annual fundraiser, "Get in the Game," an exciting and memorable event.

Both celebratory events successfully introduced the united organization and the key supporters affiliated with White-Williams Scholars and Philadelphia Futures, fostering new friendships and a renewed commitment to our work and mission.

"The potential of the merger is great," said Joan C. Mazzotti, executive director of Philadelphia Futures. "We look forward to the year ahead as we set the course for the future of our organization."
